UPS power inverters

A UPS unit, which stands for Uninterruptible Power Supply, is a very special kind of power inverter and battery charger.

A UPS works much the same way as our power inverter and battery charger combination systems. The UPS is designed to be connected or inserted in between the source of power (either grid-fed electricity, solar or generator power) and the load it feeds and protects.

When there is a power failure, the UPS switches over from its normal power source to its own power source almost instantaneously and automatically.

Although UPS systems are not limited to a specific kind or type of electrical equipment, UPS are more often used to protect appliances like computers, telecommunications facilities and medical life support and intensive care monitoring equipment where any unexpected power interruption or failure could have life threatening consequences, or business disruption, data and/or income loss.

UPS units come in all shapes and sizes, ranging from small units which can back up a single PC with a TFT or LCD screen (about 400VA) to units so large that they can power an entire office block(many megawatts)

The much larger UPS units will often operate together with back up generators and even solar power systems.

Two general categories are used to classify most modern UPS systems. These are on-line and off-line UPS systems.

An on-line UPS always provides the power to its load from its own internal energy supply, which in turn gets continuously charged by the input power (either grid-fed electricity or generator)

An off-line or standby UPS allows the load to get its power directly from the input power source, and the back up power circuits only get switched on when the input power source fails.

A true uninterruptible unit is the double conversion on-line UPS system.

In these systems, the input power source – AC goes to the back up batteries (power storage) and then is converted back to AC power through a built in true sine wave power inverter.

This form of UPS provides the cleanest power possible for the specific load it is supplying.

Below is a comprehensive list of various kinds and sizes of UPS systems:
